Refresh our delivery of social services with new innovative ideas like the St. Albert Community Village. Our city does not have a Social Master Plan to guide decisions. I would like a document that would ensure our social infrastructure is considered in all decisions.
Refresh our downtown by embracing the Perron District designation and work toward implementation of the new Downtown redevelopment plan
Refresh our long-range transit plan. The City of Edmonton is progressing rapidly with LRT planning and we can't afford to miss the "train".
Refreshing ways to attract business to St. Albert. A stand-alone economic development corporation would provide a venue where ideas on economic growth are not lost through city administration
Refocus
Refocus our new residential neighbourhood planning by requiring more multifamily and smaller lots. More diversity is required in new developments for our retail and service-based businesses; and it can't be the last land developed in each new area
Refocus our taxation strategy. Accepting higher taxes for higher service levels can no longer be taken for granted. We need to keep tax increases below our neighbouring municipalities so we can regain our competiveness in the region; we must demand maximum value for our tax dollars.
Refocus our strategy in Riel Park. We cannot afford to meet the remediation requirements set out by Alberta Environment & Fisheries & Oceans; we must demand they pick up more of the cost, or simply abandon phases 3 and 4 until a future date
Refocus our policing model. The current "No Call too Small" practice is proving to be very expensive. Priority should be placed on areas such as organized crime, reckless and impaired driving. Preventative programs such as DARE in grade 8 and neighbourhood development are extremely important. Ad hoc community groups such as the one in Braeside, working together with RCMP and the city, is the answer to problem crime areas
Renew
Renew our sense of community by facilitating the development of neighbourhood organizations and events, including block parties. Investigate the merits of community leagues
Renew our commitment to promoting the 40 Developmental Assets in youth. Collaborate with schools to support their existing programs in this area and find new ways to advance this important initiative
Renew our Seniors' Centre by ensuring it is included in the plans for the downtown redevelopment. Look into housing several not-for-profit agencies under one roof, therefore avoiding duplication of operating expenses
Renew efforts to bring more family doctors to St. Albert. Strengthen the family doctors connection with our community hospital
Renew the City’s commitment to increasing non-residential development. Council needs to have discipline when it comes to zoning decisions
Renew the Sturgeon River as a place to enjoy nature
Renew our community spirit and pride by celebrating the City’s 150th Anniversary in style! Saying that we need to keep the budget under control. Enough tax payers dollars have been put towards this celebration. St. Albert will show its true colours to people in the region and across the province in 2011 by fundraising and volunteering!
