I meet with Peter Bailey at the St. Albert public library today. We discussed the various options for expansion. Our city is in need of more library space. This is not in question. We currently have approx 25000 square feet and studies show a city of our size need over 50000. The question is should we?
1.Expand within St. Albert Place
2.Build a satellite location
3.Build a larger brand new location
4.Do nothing
Expansion within St. Albert Place is a short term fix as there is just not enough room
A satellite location has many advantages. I like the idea in that it brings a new location closer to residents in the newer areas of northern St. Albert. I do worry that operating costs will be too excessive.
A new building in the downtown core is a very appealing option. One that will anchor our new concept for the region. One that will attract people and offer a variety of programs for all residents. I realize this is extremely expensive. I would call for a business plan on this concept
Doing nothing can no longer be an option. Various studies going back 10 year acknowledge the need for more space.
Our family is a user of the library and I would like to see it near the top of the capital project priorities list
